To repeat as HBCU champion, Jackson State emphasizes ‘football standard’

Jackson State head coach T.C. Taylor made it clear that every moment reading up to the season opener against Hampton carries real stakes.

“As they get closer now, it counts. These games count right now,” Taylor declared on Monday, signaling the shift from offseason preparation to championship pursuit.

Fresh off a 2024 HBCU national title, the Tigers have spent two weeks in intense training, with solid scrimmage performances encouraging the staff.

Taylor praised both the defensive and offensive units, noting how turnovers and scoring from the defense matched big plays on offense.

He emphasized the depth of his offensive line and running back corps as preparations continue for the August 30 opener against Hampton.

The coach highlighted the importance of veterans leading in meetings and on the practice field, keeping their sights set on playing football in December.

“We’ve got enough guys back from last year’s championship team. I hate to keep bringing it up, but this is a new season,” Taylor emphasized. “They understand the standard. We talk about the JSU football standard, and these guys get it.”

As fall camp continues, Taylor stressed the necessity of having a well-conditioned squad ready for the season’s long grind. Weekly goals include strength and conditioning to last through November and December, and ensuring that up to a dozen linemen are game-ready for depth.

“Let’s get in the best condition possible so when November and December roll around, we’re still good to go,” he said.

The head coach continually reinforces the Jackson State “standard,” reminding his team that success is built on daily effort and discipline, not just talent or the memory of last year’s triumph.

For Taylor and the Tigers, the message is unambiguous: every rep and every decision is vital now, because these games count.

“You have to show up every day — in meetings, in practice — if you want to be the guy,” he said. “The goal is still playing football in December.”
