HBCU football coach Brian Jenkins gets promotion after team’s hot start

Edward Waters has officially promoted Brian Jenkins to head football coach following the Tigers’ 3-0 start to the 2025 season.

Jenkins, who named interim coach after then-coach Toriano Morgan resigned in July, wasted no time making an impact, leading Edward Waters to wins over Savannah State and Miles College and a statement 41-38 upset against No. 13 Virginia Union in the inaugural Unity Classic.

“I am humbled and honored to be officially named head coach of this program,” Jenkins stated. “This is about more than football — it’s about our young men, our university, and our community. I’m proud of what we’ve accomplished so far, but we know the job is just beginning. Our best football is still ahead of us.”

Jenkins’ tenure has energized the Tigers and their supporters. His approach, built on discipline and accountability, has paid immediate dividends. He has delivered explosive offense, stingy defense, and special teams that have helped the team navigate one of the most demanding early schedules in school history.

Ashley Conner, Interim Vice President of Intercollegiate Athletics, praised Jenkins’ leadership and the turnaround he has sparked.

“Coach Jenkins has proven in just a short period of time that he is the right leader to guide Edward Waters football into the future,” Conner said. “His passion, his vision for this program, and the results speak for themselves. We are proud to remove the interim tag and officially name him our head football coach.”

Edward Waters’ next challenge will be a road test against Bethune-Cookman University, where Jenkins previously led the Wildcats to multiple FCS playoff appearances.

The Tigers will aim to extend their unbeaten streak when the teams meet in Daytona Beach next week. Kickoff is set for 3:00 p.m. on HBCU Go.
