The winter has been kind to Howard basketball.
Both the men’s and women’s programs have charged into the new year, boasting winning records and renewed confidence.
The men’s squad stands at 9–5, while the women’s team has surged to a 10–5 mark — proof of depth and growing belief
Howard men finding identity early
For head coach Kenneth Blakeney’s men, balance has defined the first two months. The Bison have become one of the MEAC’s most complete teams, pairing veteran guard play with an improved defensive mindset.
Upperclassmen like junior guard Cedric Taylor III have steadied the offense while graduate guard Bryce Harris (who leads the Bison in scoring at 19.8 points per game) and Cam Gillus’ athleticism have added a dynamic and deep guard presence.
Howard’s ability to share the ball has also stood out. The Bison rank among MEAC conference leaders with 14.5 assists per game, which has led to a 76.5-point per game output, reflecting an offense fueled by movement and trust.
A balanced nonconference schedule helped the Bison grow as a unit. After getting off to a 2-2 start, Howard has won seven of its last 10 games, including a current five-game winning streak, with wins over Niagara, North Carolina A&T, Drexel, and UNC-Wilmington.
With MEAC play around the corner after a road game at Big 10 Northwestern, the Bison appear poised to contend for another NCAA Tournament postseason run.
Women showing growth and grit
On the women’s side, head coach Ty Grace has leaned on experience — and defensive toughness — to guide her team to a 10–5 start. Forward Zennia Thomas has led the charge offensively at 15.5 points per game, including five games of at least 20 points in non-conference play.
In contrast, Zoe Stewart has complemented Thomas well, averaging 12.5 points and shooting 37 percent from 3-point range.
Ranked No. 13 in the Women’s Mid-Major Top 25 poll, Howard’s dominance on defense has carried the group. The Bison have averaged 10 steals per game and 18.1 points per game off turnovers. That was key in an impressive win over P4 Cincinnati
That edge has carried the Bison through tight contests and propelled them as favorites to take the MEAC again.
Bison basketball rising together
There’s a shared energy around Burr Gymnasium these days — an optimism rooted in effort and culture. With both Howard teams sitting above .500 and showing signs of continued growth, the Bison faithful have reason to believe something special is brewing on both sidelines.
As January approaches, the challenge for both squads will be to turn momentum into consistency. If their starts are any indication, the Bison are well on their way.
