Angela Suggs, who was briefly booked into a Florida jail on accusations that she committed fraud and larceny, has been placed on administrative leave, according to Florida A&M University officials.
Suggs turned herself in at the Leon County Detention Facility on Monday in connection with the charges that stemmed from a months-long state investigation by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.
The current FAMU athletic director is accused of incurring $24,000 in unauthorized charges by misusing her credit card while employed at the Florida Sports Foundation, per the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.
Suggs charges are one count grand theft larceny of more than $20,000 and less than $100,000, one count fraud to swindle or obtain property under $20,000 and four counts of fraud for travel expense claims.
Grand theft for the specific allegation Suggs was charged with is a second-degree felony punishable by up to 15 years in prison or probation and $10,000 in fines upon conviction, according to Florida-based Carlson, Meissner and Hayslett Law Firm.

Under Florida law, any scheme to defraud resulting in losses between $300 and $20,000 is a second or third-degree felony. Penalties can range from 5 to 15 years in prison and fines up to $10,000.
Suggs is being placed on administrative leave with pay “until further notice,” FAMU said.
“While the matter is unrelated to FAMU, she has been placed on administrative leave with pay until further notice,” the statement said. “Athletics business operations will continue under the deputy directors of athletics, Travis Glasgow and Brittney Johnson.”
Glasgow is the university’s deputy director of athletics & chief operating officer. He previously worked at FAMU and Kennesaw State. Johnson is deputy director of athletics and chief integrity officer and joined FAMU in 2023.
