HBCU basketball player dies, another injured, following ATV accident

Cameron Woodall, who played college basketball at multiple HBCUs, died following an ATV accident.

He was 26.

The incident occurred in Mississippi, where Woodall was riding an ATV alongside another individual on a separate vehicle, Hinds County Sheriff Tyree D. Jones told The Clarion-Ledger.

Authorities responded to the scene at approximately 11:30 p.m. on June 7, where Woodall was pronounced dead. The second rider sustained minor injuries and was taken to a nearby hospital.

The Hinds County Sheriff’s Office has launched an investigation into the accident.

Woodall played basketball at Copiah-Lincoln Community College, Grambling State University, and, most recently, Tougaloo College during the 2022-23 season. The 6-foot-6 forward was twice named Second Team All-Gulf Coast Athletic Conference.

Tougaloo College paid tribute to Woodall on Instagram, describing him as “a beloved former men’s basketball standout” known for his “larger-than-life presence, fierce competitiveness on the court, and kind-hearted spirit off it.”

The statement emphasized that his impact reached far beyond basketball, calling him “a friend, a brother, and a true Bulldog through and through,” and extended condolences to his family, friends, teammates, and all who knew him.
