Jackson State continues dominance of Southern with 7th straight over SWAC rival

JaCobian Morgan showed why he was voted preseason SWAC Offensive Player of the Year.

The junior quarterback threw for 337 yards and two touchdowns in leading Jackson State to a decisive 38-13 victory over Southern in the Boombox Classic on Saturday night.

The Tigers, now 3-1, seized momentum just before halftime when Morgan fired a 51-yard touchdown pass to Ja’Naylon Dupree with seconds left on the clock, putting Jackson State ahead 17-13.

Southern 1-4 jumped out to a brief lead in the second quarter on a 73-yard touchdown run by Trey Holly, but the Jaguars’ offense struggled to keep pace through the second half.

Donerio Davenport capped drives with two short touchdown runs, one in the third quarter and another in the fourth, helping Jackson State pull away.

The Tigers’ defense proved dominant, holding Southern to just 107 yards after the break and forcing key turnovers, including an interception by Kam Sallis deep in Jackson State territory.

Morgan’s consistent accuracy, highlighted by an 82-yard touchdown strike to Nate Rembert late in the game, secured the commanding win.

Ahmad Miller added 101 yards on the ground for Jackson State, while Rembert finished with 102 receiving yards. The Tigers move forward in SWAC play after showcasing a strong offensive and defensive effort on their home field.
