Son of legendary HBCU quarterback joins father with new NFL team

The son of an HBCU and NFL legend will be joining his father at work next season.

D.J. Williams, son of former Grambling great and Super Bowl XXII MVP Doug Williams, will be hired as the Washington Commanders’ new quarterbacks coach, according to an ESPN report. He most recently served as quarterbacks coach of the Atlanta Falcons. Doug Williams is the senior advisor to general manager Adam Peters.

Williams played quarterback for his father during Doug Williams’ second stint as Grambling head coach from 2011-2013.

The Tigers won the 2011 SWAC championship game over Alabama A&M with Williams as the signal caller.

He began his coaching career with four seasons as a New Orleans Saints offensive assistant before being hired by the Falcons as assistant quarterbacks coach in 2024. He was elevated to the head quarterbacks coach position for the 2025 season.
