In a recap of its latest Board of Directors meeting, the CIAA alluded to a potential change of scenery for their conference basketball tournament.
The conference announced that in January 2025, they will begin a bidding process for the site of the 2027 tournament and beyond. They expect to announce the next site before the 2026 basketball tournament.
This comes one day after the CIAA announced that its football championship game would move from Salem, Virginia, to Durham, North Carolina, beginning in 2025 and continuing through at least 2027.
Baltimore, the current site of the CIAA Basketball Tournament after 14 years in Charlotte, has made a strong case for continuing to host the tournament.
“Baltimore has positioned themselves as strong tournament host, as indicated in the by the upward trajectory of its economic impact during tournament week,” the conference said in its Board of Directors meeting recap. “The economic impact over the past three years currently stands at $81.7M.”
The 2026 CIAA tournament will mark the 80-year anniversary of the event and will be the fifth since returning to the city of Baltimore (Baltimore previously hosted the 1952 tournament).
