Florida Memorial baseball coach steps down days before team Black College World Series trip

Florentino Burgos, who has been the baseball coach at Florida Memorial for eight seasons, will be stepping down from his position as head coach, the school announced on Saturday.

Under Burgos’ guidance, the Lions achieved a record of 147-187-1, including the prestigious victory at the 2023 Black College World Series.

“On behalf of Florida Memorial University and the Athletics Department, I want to thank Coach Burgos for his dedication and hard work, Jason Horn, FMU director of athletics, said in a statement.  “His impact on our student-athletes extends far beyond the baseball diamond, fostering an environment of excellence and growth. We are grateful for his commitment to enhancing the FMU student-athlete experience.”

FMU will launch a national search for the next baseball coach.

Assistant Andre Payne will be the acting head coach during the team’s upcoming 2024 Black College World Series trip.
