HBCU gymnast Morgan Price wins national title, makes history

Morgan Price made history when she spurned an SEC offer to compete with the first-ever HBCU gymnastics team back in 2022.

Now the Fisk University sophomore has made history again, becoming the first gymnast from an HBCU to win a national title. She scored 39.225 in the all-around to win the United States Gymnastics Collegiate National title on Friday night.

History was made at Hollinger Fieldhouse in West Chester, PA on Friday night.

Morgan Price arrived at Fisk in the fall of 2022 with much fanfare as she was a part of the inaugural squad of gymnasts at the Nashville, TN squad that would become the first in HBCU history. Price was a highly-decorated prospect who had initially committed to Arkansas, where her sister competed as well. But with the news that Fisk University was putting together an HBCU squad, she chose to take the road less traveled.

Price has been a star on the mat since the day she arrived, and garnered a lot of attention. Her coach, Corrinne Tarver, told HBCU Gameday in 2023 that she has taken on an ambassador role for the team and her university.

“I think that’s the best part about Morgan is — she’s incredible,” Tarver said. “Even though she’s scoring well, she’s up there and everyone wants to interview her and she’s just kind of that face — I guess you can say to some extent  — of Fisk.”

“I mean, I think we have a lot of faces, but Morgan is definitely one of them. But she’s really humble and she’s out there for her team. That’s what she cares about, is helping her teammates, helping this program to grow and get better.”

And now, Price has a national championship in her back pocket. But she also has the chance for more hardware. She will compete on Vault, Bars & Floor on Sunday, April 14 in the Individual Event Finals.
