Longtime MEAC football rivals to play in 40th Circle City Classic

Longtime MEAC football rivals to play in 40th Circle City Classic

The North Carolina Central football team took over Indianapolis last season, and this time, they’ll look to get a conference win out of it.

The 40th anniversary edition of the Circle City Classic, one of the oldest HBCU classic games, will feature the Eagles and Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference opponent Norfolk State on Saturday, Sept. 28, at Lucas Oil Stadium, according to FBSchedules.com. This will be N.C. Central’s second straight season in the Circle City Classic, while the Spartans will be making their first appearance in the game.

The Eagles, who were the MEAC runner-up and an FCS playoff team last season, got a big boost from reserve quarterback Walker Harris, who threw for 263 yards and five touchdowns in a 45-3 win over Mississippi Valley State in the 2023 Circle City Classic. Harris will likely enter the season as the Eagles starting QB, replacing all-time leader passer Davius Richard.

The Circle City Classic will be Norfolk State’s third official classic of the season as they open 2024  against Celebration Bowl champion Florida A&M on Aug. 24 in the MEAC/SWAC challenge. The Spartans will face rival Virginia State in the Labor Day Classic on Sept. 7. They also have their annual “Battle Of The Bay” the next week with a visit from Hampton.
